Life on earth is no longer as trendy as it used to be, especially when the alternative is living on Mars. The space project ‘Mars One’ just started its registration phase and is already processing applications from 30 countries.
An average of 1,000 people submitted their requests to live on the Red Planet, a project of the Dutch company "Mars One", which plans to build the first human colony on the neighbouring planet around 2022-2023.
Currently, the selection of 20 candidates to settle on Mars by 2033 (After going through many tests to prove their adaptation ability) is underway. The project's creators say: "We are very excited about the launch of the selection. During this first round, we will open the doors of Mars to everyone".
The company is committed to building a neighbourhood where life is possible, with an "update" every two years, emphasizing that "the plan is realistic and accurate, and is based solely on existing technologies."
The mission plan is as follows:
- 2013: Selection of the first 40 astronauts and construction of a facility replica for training purposes.
- 2014: Production of the first communications satellite.
- 2016: Launch of a modified SpaceX Dragon with a supply of 2.5 tons of food.
- 2018: Launch of a Rover exploration vehicle similar to the one used in the moon to select the location of the colony.
- 2021: Launch of 6 additional Shipping Dragons and a Rover with two residential units, two life units and two food supplies.
- 2022: Launch of SpaceX Falcon Heavy with an initial group of four people.
- 2023: Arrival of the first inhabitants of Mars.
- 2025: Arrival of a second group of four people.
- 2033: The colony reaches 20 inhabitants.
"The project is economically and logistically doable, due to the number of suppliers and experts in existing space exploration" says the website. Mars One estimates the cost of the first flight at around 6,000 million euros, with an estimated 4,000 million euros per trip every two years.
